You thrash rapidly on your keyboard, fuming as you try not to break the keys. You’re seething. Your eyes shoot poison at the screen.
The reason?
Student council has voted against the marketing of Coca-Cola products on campus. While we normally rely on student representatives to put out our opinions, we also lay the backlash onto them when we disagree with their decisions. With the chance to influence a decision, such as in Presidential elections, many individuals choose not to take any action whatsoever yet have a lot (of mostly negative) things to say. It’s sad that a decision such as removing Coca-Cola products off a prestigious liberal arts campus can create uproar larger than a privileged White man’s article on why undocumented students should not be allowed to receive financial aid and attend college. Truly, it shows the lack of concern and privilege that these students on campus have. They walk around with Prada bags and J. Crew sweaters, calling themselves “liberals” yet support a company that exploits individuals and choose to not speak against an opinion that clearly wishes to bar others from opportunities.
It’s sad, in my opion, that the biggest concern of these students is a soda company. They don’t have to worry about how their parents will live day to day, based on finances, and they don’t have to worry about whether or not graduating from college will change their position in society. Their demands to keep Coca-Cola products on campus is not on the basis of ethics, but instead on the basis that these kids are so used to having whatever they want whenever they ask for it. While they have “strong beliefs” and “desires” they are not looking to actually fight. They are not pulling themselves together to push forward their voices and emphasize their cause.
Simply, they are bitching and whining.
I’m so very sick of inaction.
